Indicative price guide

How much does IATI insurance cost in 2026: real prices

The price of IATI insurance depends on many factors: destination, duration, age, product chosen and optional extras contracted. This guide gives you indicative ranges by scenario and explains which factors raise or lower the premium, so that you arrive at the official simulator with realistic expectations.

Notice: the ranges you will see here are indicative and based on simulations and public traveller reviews as of September 2026. The exact price is only given by IATI's official simulator entering your specific data. We are not IATI or affiliates: we do not sell or quote insurance.

1. Which factors determine the price

The price of an IATI travel insurance (as with any insurer) is calculated by combining several factors. Understanding each one helps you compare quotes and know why two very similar trips can produce different premiums.

  • Destination: the most decisive factor. Destinations with expensive healthcare (USA, Canada, Japan) have much higher premiums than Europe or Latin America.
  • Duration: the more days, the higher the total premium but the lower the daily premium.
  • Age of the insured: travellers over 65-70 pay higher premiums; some products have a maximum age limit.
  • Product chosen: IATI Estrella costs more than IATI Escapadas; IATI Mochilero has a different daily premium than IATI Estrella.
  • Coverage and capital sums: extending medical capital, including risk sports or adding cancellation raises the premium.
  • Deductibles: policies with low or zero deductibles usually have a higher premium.
  • Number of insured: groups and families usually have a discount per insured.

2. Indicative ranges by destination

All ranges are indicative, in euros, for a young-medium adult (25-45 years), standard product (IATI Estrella), 1 week, without additional cancellation coverage. Check the official simulator for your specific case.

Destination Indicative range (1 week) Reason
Europe 15 – 40 € Reasonable healthcare + EHIC covers the basics
Latin America 25 – 55 € Medium capital sums, relevant repatriation
Asia (Thailand, Vietnam) 30 – 60 € Long-distance repatriation
Japan 40 – 90 € Expensive healthcare, high capital sums
USA / Canada 60 – 150 € Most expensive healthcare in the world
World cruises 50 – 130 € Expensive evacuation from open sea

3. Indicative ranges by duration (IATI Mochilero)

Ranges for IATI Mochilero, young adult, worldwide destination excluding USA/Canada.

Duration Indicative range Approx. daily cost
1 month 80 – 150 € ~3 – 5 €/day
3 months 200 – 400 € ~2 – 4 €/day
6 months 380 – 700 € ~2 – 4 €/day
12 months 700 – 1,400 € ~2 – 4 €/day

4. How age affects the price

Age is one of the factors with the greatest impact on the premium. Approximate surcharge ranges by age band:

  • 0 – 17 years: some products apply a discount (family trips), others have a proportional premium.
  • 18 – 64 years: standard product rate.
  • 65 – 74 years: usual surcharge (indicative range +30% to +80% on standard rate).
  • 75 – 84 years: significant surcharge, some products unavailable, medical capital sums may be reduced.
  • 85+ years: very few products available, high premiums and limitations on some coverage.

5. Common discounts and promotions

  • Online contracting discount: IATI usually applies a 5–15% discount on the base rate when contracting directly on its website.
  • Group discounts: from a certain number of insured on the same policy, there is usually a discount per insured.
  • Family discounts: the IATI Familia product usually improves on the price of taking out individual policies.
  • Seasonal promotions: Black Friday, summer campaigns, low season for contracting may include extra discounts.
  • Promotional codes: discount codes circulate on backpacker channels and blogs. Always verify the code is official and current.

6. How to pay less without losing coverage

  1. Choose the right product for your trip. Do not take out Mochilero for 5 days on the beach: you will pay for coverage you will not use.
  2. Review which optional extras you actually need. Broad cancellation, extreme sports or high-value luggage are only useful if they apply to your trip.
  3. Adjust medical capital to your destination. You don't need the maximum for Europe; yes in the USA or Canada.
  4. Consider low deductible only if you travel a lot. For a one-off trip, a moderate deductible usually compensates on the premium.
  5. Contract before travelling. Contracting in advance allows activating cancellation coverage and avoids last-minute surcharges.
  6. Compare with other insurers. Do not assume that IATI is always the cheapest: Chapka or Heymondo may be tighter for your case.
  7. Do not oversize capital sums without reason. Very high capital sums without justification (for example, €5M of civil liability for a beach trip) inflate the premium.

7. Common mistakes that make you pay more

  • Taking out the maximum coverage by default without analysing the trip.
  • Duplicating coverage already covered by the Premium credit card.
  • Ignoring the European Health Insurance Card on EU trips and taking out excessive medical capital.
  • Adding optional extras unnecessarily (extreme sports if you will not practise them).
  • Buying at the airport: "last-minute" products are usually much more expensive.
  • Not applying the current discounts at checkout.
