Notice: the specific COVID coverage varies by product, year and particular conditions. This guide reflects usual sector practice as of September 2026. Always verify the current conditions on IATI's official website before contracting or filing a claim.
1. How COVID coverage has evolved
During 2020–2022, COVID was treated as an exceptional situation in most policies: specific ad hoc coverage, partial exclusions by risk zones and special quarantine coverage. From 2023 a progressive normalisation began: COVID has been integrated as just another infectious disease within the medical assistance of policies.
In 2026, most insurers —IATI included— handle COVID in the same way as other infectious diseases (flu, gastroenteritis, etc.): covered within the general medical capital, without specific clauses. This has advantages (simplicity, no "COVID small print") and disadvantages (there are no special quarantine packages by default in all products).
2. What is usually covered
- Medical assistance abroad due to COVID: hospitalisation, consultations, prescribed medicines, within the medical capital contracted.
- Diagnostic tests by medical prescription: if you have symptoms and a professional advises you to take a PCR or antigen test, it falls within medical assistance.
- Medical repatriation: if by medical criteria transfer to Spain is appropriate, covered within the general repatriation coverage.
- Trip cancellation due to prior positive test: if you have contracted the trip cancellation coverage, a positive COVID test with a documented medical impediment before travelling is usually a covered reason.
- Extended stay due to medical quarantine: in some products. Requires the quarantine to be medically prescribed (not only required administratively by a country).
3. What is NOT usually covered
- Travel tests (not medical): PCR or antigen tests required to fly, enter a country or return, without symptoms or clinical suspicion. They are an administrative procedure, not medical assistance.
- Administrative quarantines without medical basis: if a country requires quarantine for travellers from specific areas and you are healthy, that extended stay is usually not covered.
- Trip cancellation due to fear of contagion or personal decision without a confirmed positive test or an official travel ban.
- Cancellations due to government restrictions in the destination country that do not reach the category of "war, terrorism or WHO-declared pandemic" (according to the policy) — many conditions expressly exclude changes in recommendations or administrative restrictions.
- Trips to destinations with official recommendation against by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the time of contracting or travelling.
- Undeclared prior symptoms: travelling knowing you have symptoms or a positive test may invalidate coverage.
4. Common scenarios resolved
I test positive before travelling and cannot fly
If you have cancellation coverage contracted and you medically document the impediment (medical certificate, official positive PCR), it is usually a covered reason for refund of non-recoverable trip expenses.
Falling ill with COVID during the trip
Medical assistance covers visits, hospitalisation, prescribed medicines and eventually repatriation if appropriate by medical criteria. Contact the 24h assistance centre before going to a private medical centre.
I am confined for being a close contact of a positive case
Complex situation. If the quarantine is administrative and not medical, it is usually not covered. If a doctor prescribes isolation due to clinical suspicion with symptoms, some policies cover extended stay. Verify with the insurer.
The country closes borders and I cannot fly
In many policies, trip interruption due to external force majeure is covered with limitations. Exact policies vary greatly: review the current particular conditions.
I am asked for a PCR to return to Spain without having symptoms
It is usually not covered by the policy. It is an administrative procedure. Keep the invoices in case the official criteria change subsequently.
5. How to activate COVID coverage
- Contact IATI's 24h assistance centre BEFORE going to a private medical centre (except in life-threatening emergency). Keep the file number they give you.
- Follow the insurer's instructions on which centre to attend. If there is direct coverage, the insurer pays the hospital.
- Request medical reports and invoices of the entire process. You will need official medical reports with diagnosis.
- Keep invoices for everything: hospital, medicines, transport, accommodation if there is extended stay.
- Submit the complete file after the trip if there was no direct coverage, for reimbursement.

6. Key documentation to claim
- Official medical report with diagnosis (confirmed COVID, positive test).
- Original invoices for all expenses.
- Official PCR or test with the issuing centre's stamp.
- Medical prescription in case of quarantine.
- Ticket change/loss receipts.
- Accommodation invoices if there is covered extended stay.
- Official communication of country restrictions (if applicable to the reason).
7. Tips before contracting
- Read expressly the clauses relating to "infectious diseases", "pandemics", "quarantines".
- Verify whether the product excludes destinations with a current official alert.
- If you have an upcoming trip to a country with an active outbreak, consider products that do cover medical quarantines.
- Take out cancellation coverage if your trip is non-refundable: it covers prior positive tests.
- Save a screenshot of the particular conditions on the day of contracting (you are covered by those conditions, not future ones).
