What luggage coverage typically includes
IATI's luggage coverage usually covers four scenarios: definitive loss (suitcase never appears), delay (arrives after X hours), material damage (breakage, contents damaged by air handling) and theft (inside or outside transport, with specific conditions). The maximum amount varies by product and high-value items usually have sublimits.
Points users typically assess
- PIR compliance: whether the insurer accepts the airline PIR as sufficient or requests additional documentation.
- Content valuation: whether they accept the declared valuation or apply depreciation by age of items.
- Delay reimbursement: minimum hours required and whether emergency purchases without strict cap are accepted.
- High-value objects: how they treat expensive electronics, jewellery, professional cameras.
- Deadlines: from report/PIR to reimbursement deposit.
Common covered and non-covered cases
Usually covered: suitcase lost by airline with issued PIR, clothing purchased while waiting for delayed luggage, visible damage on arrival reported at airport, hotel theft with formal police report. Usually NOT covered or disputed: high-value undeclared items, items left in unattended vehicle, luggage without PIR (even if loss is demonstrated), items not reasonable for the type of trip.
How to strengthen your review if you share one
If you have activated luggage coverage, provide these data: type of incident (loss/theft/damage), documents provided (PIR, police report, invoices), total amount claimed vs reimbursed, resolution deadline and whether depreciation was applied by age of items.
