1. Typical Thailand traveller profile
Most travellers to Thailand fall into three profiles: 3-6 week backpacker (Bangkok – north – islands route), 2-3 week holiday trip (cities + beach combo) and long stay (digital nomad, long retreat, yoga or diving course). Each profile needs different coverage.
2. Healthcare costs in Thailand
Thailand has a dual healthcare system. The private hospitals in Bangkok (Bumrungrad, Bangkok Hospital), Chiang Mai and Phuket are excellent but expensive by local standards — with prices approaching Western private healthcare. A dengue admission with 3 nights of hospitalisation can easily exceed 3,000-6,000 EUR, and a surgical intervention (motorbike accident, appendicitis) 10,000-20,000 EUR.
Public hospitals are much cheaper but have a lower standard of care for foreigners, waiting lists and often a language barrier. IATI's assistance network typically operates with reference private hospitals.
3. Common health risks
- Motorbike/scooter accidents: the number one cause of serious incidents for travellers. Hiring a scooter without a valid licence from your country of origin can invalidate coverage.
- Mosquito-borne diseases: dengue is endemic (all year round, peaks in the rainy season), chikungunya, malaria in rural border areas. Use repellent and covering clothes at dusk.
- Gastroenteritis and food poisoning: non-drinkable water in many areas, street food. Avoid ice of dubious origin and uncooked salads in poor establishments.
- Water accidents: diving, snorkelling, jet skis. Beware of the "jet ski scams" in Phuket (invoices for alleged damage on return).
- Heatstroke and dehydration: especially between March and May.
- Animal bites: stray dogs, macaques (especially in temples and Lopburi). They require urgent evaluation because of rabies risk.

5. Common claim scenarios
Dengue admission in Bangkok
Contact the 24/7 helpline before going to the private hospital. Direct billing is typical. Keep all medical reports, tests and invoices. The excess rarely applies to hospital admissions.
Scooter accident on Koh Phangan
Sensitive point. Usual requirement: valid A or A2 licence at home depending on scooter engine size, plus an international driving permit. Without those documents, an accident can be excluded. Many local rental shops only ask for the passport but that does not cover you legally.
Missed domestic flight due to delay
If you have delay coverage, keep boarding passes, official delay communications and hotel/meal invoices where applicable. Domestic flights (AirAsia, Nok Air) usually have few automatic rights, and the policy may be your only option.
Baggage theft or loss at the airport
File an immediate report at the airport police station (compulsory) + PIR (Property Irregularity Report) from the airline if checked in. Without an official report there is no reimbursement.
6. Before travelling to Thailand: checklist
- Buy the insurance before leaving home.
- Keep a digital copy of the certificate (email, phone photo, PDF in cloud).
- Note the 24/7 assistance number on paper + mobile.
- Check requirements if you plan to hire a motorbike (licence, international permit).
- DEET 30-50% mosquito repellent and covering clothing.
- Standard vaccinations up to date (Tetanus, Hepatitis A) + consider Hepatitis B, rabies and typhoid fever depending on route.
- Download the IATI app if available with your product.
